Finally after decades, the 16th century icon of the Virgen del Pronto Socorro made its way to public veneration. She is now enshrined at the side altar of the church. I came from the hospital for a consultation due to my vertigo in the morning. Having learned that my mom and sister will be going to Binondo, I decided to hitch and paid a visit to the loving Virgen. According to a friend, Wilfred Jason Naval, there was used to be an icon of San Jose similar to the Virgen but privately owned. Here's a brief description of the icon. Nuestra Señora del Pronto Socorro is a framed colored oil painting on a metal sheet. It shows the Blessed Mother with the Holy Child seated on Her right arm. She is dressed in red tunic with blue |
mantle. The icon of the virgen was venerated during the year 1588 in the church of the Holy Kings in Manila, which was under the Dominican Fathers. Later in 1598, the icon was transferred to the Church of St. Gabriel in Binondo. After the earthquake in June 1863, the icon was brought to the parish of Binondo where she is presently venerated. The new feast of the virgen will be celebrated every last Sunday of May.
