Semana Santa is famous in the town of Angono, Rizal. One of the highlights of any Semana Santa activities is the procession of the Santo Entierro. In Angono, the image used for the procession belongs to the Familia Fuentes. I was fortunate enough to meet one of the descendants, Jan Nico Macapagal.
According to Macapagal, the 17th century image of Santo Entierro de Angono is approximately 5 ft. tall, carved from wood, with movable arms, neck, and eyes. The underarms of the image is covered with buffalo leather so not to expose the ball-joint. The image used to be rented from a family in Pasig and transported to Angono via bangka every Samana Santa. There was a time when the owner of this image is in dire need of money. They sold the image to the Fuentes Family (Juan and Dominga Fuentes) at 20 or 30 pesos and 5 sacks of rice.
The image is only brought out during Semana Santa processions.
